Magnetic Fields Flying Planes Brazil

Following today's news about the Airfrance Rio to Paris plane that dropped off the map off the coast of Brazil, I remembered a program I recently saw, that was about the diminishing magnetic field of the earth, and how this field protects us from solar winds.
Where the fields are weakest, we see an aurora (at the poles).

Another strange bit is that the news reports mention the plane having been in the air for a good while before it disappeared, something like 35,000 feet.
I don't think that storms, lightning, etc occur so highup.

anyone? anyone?

here's an interesting article that states something similar from the National Post
